Friends Album: Photos 17 & 18

Photo No. 17 tries to be tricky:

Friend No. 17

Although the signature on the front says Newburgh, N.Y., the back of the photo tells the full story:

This photo was taken in Danbury, Conn. But this is still another photography studio! I found a Frederick Borman, photographer in a 1912-13 directories in Danbury, Conn. He has an ad in the same directories and the address for the studio is 242 Main Street (that’s the same address as Charles Blackman’s studio!). However, the ad doesn’t have the full name of the partnership featured in the photo above.

Still, those dates fit the time period for this photo, which I think is taken later than most, if not all, of the photos we’ve seen so far from this album. The crispness of the details and the child’s dress lead me to think this. On that subject, I think it is a boy pictured, though I’m still trying to figure out his outfit. It looks like it’s half-way between a sailor suit and a dress.

On to Photo No. 18:

Friend No. 18 aka William Morrell

We’re back at Mrs. Folsom’s* studio for this photo, which has a very helpful inscription on the back:

I send a thank-you to the helpful inscriber of this photo — what a wealth of information! Not only do we have the subject’s name, but his location and a relationship to a Mrs. Stanley Young. Maybe she and her husband are related to Fred Young?

I found a Stanley M. Young in Danbury, Conn., in 1880 and 1900. His wife was Mary L. I separately searched for a William Morrell in Bridgewater, Conn., and found one at age 2 in 1860. There was a Mary L. in the household. I found William and his other sister Emma living with a different family in 1870. I haven’t been able to find more records that are definitely associated with William.

I did follow Stanley M. Young forward to 1910, when he was a widower living with his daughter, her husband and their daughter. Her name was Alpha Margaret Ballard.

*Whilst looking for photographer Borman, I found a photographer in the employ of Mrs. Folsom’s studio:
