Friends Album: Photos 7 & 8

I have acquired an old photo album containing many pictures from the late 1800s. I’m going through the album to catalog the photos with as much information as can be gleaned from them. My hope is to return the album and photos to the descendants of those pictured. Read about the first photos in the album here. **Click on the images below for larger versions**

Here is Photo No. 7 (once again, taken in Danbury, but at still another photography studio):

Friend No. 7

What’s really exciting is what’s on the reverse:

We have a female photographer! Apparently. Mrs. J. H. Folsom aka Mrs. Joseph H. Folsom aka Elizabeth Folsom. She appears in Danbury city directories from 1885-1890. I found her and her husband in the 1880 census, but he is listed as a photographer and she is keeping house. Interesting…

Her studio is listed at 161, 197 and 246 Main Street over the years. Oh how I wish the photographer’s imprint had the street address!

Moving on. Here’s Photo No. 8:

Friend No. 8 aka Fred Young

The reverse side of his photo is even more exciting!

As you can see, this photo was taken in New Milford, Connecticut, by a J. E. Canfield. I found photographer James E. Canfield in New Milford in the 1880 U.S. census on Ancestry.

New Milford is in the county of Litchfield. I found a Fred Young in Winchester, Litchfield, Connecticut, in the 1920 U.S. census on Ancestry. He was only 44 in 1920. That makes him awfully young at the time when I believe this photo was taken. I think I also found the same Fred Young’s death record. On FamilySearch, I found a Fred Young born in 1889 to another Fred Young in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. The elder Fred Young sounds like a better candidate for my photo subject. I’m going to need to do some more sleuthing to settle this though.

[Update 3/12/11: I posted an update on my progress here.]
